Journalism Claims Preakness Stakes Victory in Thrilling Finish
Updated May 27, 2025
In a dramatic finish at Pimlico, Journalism, ridden by Umberto Rispoli, surged from behind to win the 150th running of the Preakness Stakes. The even-money favorite closed a five-length gap in the final furlong to capture the second leg of the US triple Crown. This victory occurred just before the historic 155-year-old venue is slated for demolition and reconstruction.
Journalism’s late push denied Gosger the win, wiht Sandman finishing third. The Michael McCarthy-trained horse overcame earlier challenges in the race, including getting boxed in when Goal Oriented drifted toward the rail, squeezing Journalism between that horse and Clever Again.
Rispoli emphasized the challenges Journalism faced during the race. He noted the horse’s resilience after encountering trouble near the quarter pole.
“I don’t know if people realize what this horse did today, I got in trouble at the quarter pole and he made himself go again. I was in a tough spot but it’s astonishing,” said Rispoli.
McCarthy echoed Rispoli’s sentiments, acknowledging the challenging race conditions and praising Journalism’s tenacity. He initially thought the challenging circumstances might lead to another near miss.
“There was a lot of bouncing around there. I guess when I saw that I kind of resigned myself to the fact it was another fantastic effort and we’d maybe come up a little bit short, but it’s testament to this horse. I couldn’t be prouder of him,” McCarthy said.
Journalism’s Preakness Stakes victory follows a second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, where Sovereignty took the top spot. Sovereignty did not compete in the Preakness, with connections citing insufficient recovery time.
British jockey saffie Osborne, riding Heart Of Honour for her trainer father Jamie, finished fifth in the race.
What’s next
Following the preakness Stakes, attention will turn to the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown, where Journalism may compete to continue its successful campaign.
