A woman in her 20s in the United States experienced a rare phenomenon known as superfecundation, becoming pregnant with a second fetus while already pregnant.
The 28-year-old, identified as Taylor Henderson, received confirmation of carrying two fetuses during an ultrasound examination at eight weeks.
The examination revealed a second fetus, approximately six weeks in gestational age, developing alongside the first.
Henderson received a diagnosis of superfecundation, a rare occurrence with only about 10 documented cases worldwide.
One fetus was conceived approximately eight weeks prior, while the othre was conceived about six weeks ago,
she stated.

Henderson shared that she was unaware of the second pregnancy initially and began documenting her experience on social media.
While the first fetus was delivered healthy in October of the previous year, the second fetus, unfortunately, did not survive. The fetus had grown significantly, but its heartbeat ceased, and development stopped,
Henderson explained.
Currently, Henderson has an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted as a precautionary measure. Superfecundation occurs when two fetuses are conceived at different times within the same uterus.
This happens when separate eggs are fertilized by sperm and one is implanted in the uterus days or weeks after the first.
Typically, hormonal changes following conception prevent further ovulation, fertilization, and implantation.

The exact cause of superfecundation remains unclear,but available data suggests a correlation with women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF).
While children resulting from superfecundation can be considered twins,their differing gestational ages lead to variations in developmental milestones.
The earlier conceived fetus typically exhibits faster growth. In a 2022 case in Australia, a woman in her 30s experienced superfecundation with an 18-day difference between conceptions.
She delivered two healthy children of different genders; though, the younger twin had not yet developed the sucking reflex when the older twin had.
