It’s the fact that our government is sending masked thugs into our neighborhoods to kidnap us, beat us, rape us, and murder us. Our President has promised to pardon those thugs no matter what they do,giving them “absolute immunity,” for any crimes they care to commit. And they’ve taken advantage of that by declaring that the Bill of Rights no longer applies to Americans they choose to target.

That officially-sanctioned state violence has also radicalized and emboldened other bad actors. There’s reports of criminals disguising themselves as government thugs in order to commit their own violent act. Racists, bigots, and other awful people are anointing themselves unofficial representatives of the regime, and are threatening anyone who doesn’t look or think like them.

The Center for Ethics and Rule of Law at the University of Pennsylvania warns that this may represent the beginning of an attempt to incite a civil war. It says, “The core danger we identified is now emerging: a violent confrontation between state and federal military forces in a major American city.”

The popular image of “prepping” involves conspiracy theorists stockpiling ammo and weapons and building bunkers in order to defend themselves from a tyrannical government. And while one point I want to make clear in this article is that the stereotypes associated with prepping ofen get in the way of the practical benefits it can bring to anyone’s life, I also want to acknowledge that, short of a nuclear exchange, we are discussing what is very much shaping up to be a worst case scenario.
