Presbyterian Church in Ireland Faces scrutiny Over Governance and Allegations of Bullying

Serious concerns regarding discipline, internal governance, and charitable compliance have been raised against the Presbyterian Church in Ireland (PCI),according to a dossier submitted to charity regulators in both northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
The report, compiled by former Alliance Party Leader and House of Lords member John Alderdice, details allegations of a troubling internal climate within the PCI. Alderdice, a former elder in the church for three decades before resigning seven years ago, outlines a pattern of issues that have come to the fore since a pivotal decision in 2018.
2018 Vote and Subsequent Fallout
In 2018, the PCI voted to exclude same-sex couples and their children from full participation in the church. This decision sparked resignations and accusations of intolerance, exposing what the dossier claims are deeper issues surrounding leadership culture and the treatment of dissenting voices.
The report alleges a pattern of bullying, intimidation, and misuse of power by senior officials. It claims that ministers and elders holding more inclusive views were disciplined or forced to leave the church. Furthermore, it highlights a lack of adequate pastoral care for those affected, with some individuals reportedly too traumatised to participate in Alderdice’s investigation.
Regulatory Review and Church Response
The dossier called on the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland’s Charities Regulator to investigate whether the PCI is meeting its obligations as a registered charity. It was initially submitted three years ago.
the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland has confirmed receipt of the dossier and stated it is actively reviewing the information. Acknowledging the complexity of the case, the Commission indicated it aims to reach a resolution in the coming months, but declined to provide further details citing confidentiality.
The Charities Regulator in the Republic of Ireland declined to comment on individual cases and offered no information regarding any potential investigation.
The Presbyterian Church in Ireland offered a brief statement, saying it does not comment on matters submitted to the Charity Commission.
PCI overview
The Presbyterian Church in Ireland serves the island of Ireland, encompassing over 540 congregations across 19 Presbyteries. its membership stands at just under 230,000, with the majority of congregations located in Northern Ireland.
In the Republic of Ireland, PCI congregations are primarily found in border counties – Donegal, Monaghan, and Cavan – and around dublin. Last year, the church celebrated the opening of a new, purpose-built church in Co Kildare, marking the first time a new congregation had opened its own dedicated building since the establishment of the Irish Free State.
