Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan warned on April 16, 2026, that the international system established after World War II is facing a deep legitimacy crisis, stating that diplomacy has been replaced by weapons and no one is safe in the current global environment.

Speaking in Istanbul, Erdoğan said the post-World War II global order, built by the victors, is losing its functionality and experiencing a major legitimacy crisis in almost every field. He emphasized that the system is no longer effective amid rising conflicts and warned that such conditions threaten regional and global peace.

Erdoğan specifically pointed to Israel as the primary obstacle to peace, stating that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions continue to threaten regional and global stability. He accused Israel of undermining international consensus and violating global legal norms through its military operations.

He further warned that military operations by Israel risk further destabilizing the region and undermining efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire, particularly in Gaza and Lebanon. Erdoğan called for renewed international efforts to uphold diplomacy and restore faith in the global system.

The Turkish president’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, including the aftermath of the Gaza conflict and cross-border hostilities involving Lebanon. He stressed that without a return to diplomatic dialogue, the world will continue to face increasing instability and erosion of trust in international institutions.

Erdoğan’s statements were reported by multiple Turkish news outlets, including Hürriyet, Anadolu Ajansı, Habertürk, Haber 7, and Sabah, all citing his public remarks delivered on April 16, 2026. His comments reflect growing concern among global leaders about the effectiveness of the post-1945 international order in addressing contemporary security challenges.
