President Marcos Discusses Mary Jane Veloso’s Transfer and Potential Clemency: What’s Next?

Mary Jane Veloso’s Return to the Philippines: Key Details

Mary Jane Veloso, a domestic helper imprisoned in Indonesia for drug trafficking since 2010, is set to return to the Philippines. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed optimism about her return but did not confirm if he would grant her clemency.

The announcement of Veloso’s transfer comes after more than 14 years. While details are still being finalized, Veloso is not yet considered a free woman. In an interview, Marcos stated, “we will see” regarding the possibility of clemency, indicating that all options are under consideration.

Indonesian Chief Minister for Law and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra clarified that Veloso’s transfer back to the Philippines comes with conditions. The Philippine government must respect and acknowledge the Indonesian court’s ruling regarding her case. Mahendra confirmed that while the transfer is happening, Veloso remains under Indonesia’s legal custody.

Philippine authorities have urged President Marcos to consider granting Veloso clemency. However, the Department of Foreign Affairs described this request as unrealistic. Veloso has faced a death sentence but was spared execution in 2015 due to intervention by then-President Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino III.

Once Veloso returns, the Philippine Department of Justice noted that she would be in physical custody of the Philippines, but Indonesia will retain legal custody. This means that Veloso must serve her sentence in the Philippines, potentially life imprisonment, since the Philippines does not have the death penalty.

The situation is evolving, and it remains to be seen what legal steps Marcos will take regarding clemency for Veloso upon her return.
