Nocturnal IOP often rises in glaucoma patients, and this increase can be more damaging than daytime pressure due to factors like reduced tear production and altered ocular hemodynamics during sleep. This is because the optic nerve is more vulnerable to damage when blood flow is reduced and pressure is elevated together. Jack Berdahl, MD, presented findings at the Hawaiian Eye meeting held January 17-23, 2026, in Waikoloa, Hawaii, emphasizing the clinical importance of nocturnal IOP monitoring. The presentation detailed how variations in nocturnal IOP correlate with rates of optic nerve damage and visual field loss.
