Price Gouging During Buen Fin: PROFECO Calls Out Liverpool, Elektra, Walmart
buen Fin Bargains or Buyer Beware? Consumer Watchdog Flags Price hikes Amid Discounts
Mexico City,Mexico - As shoppers across Mexico eagerly snapped up deals during the annual Buen Fin shopping extravaganza, consumer protection agency PROFECO issued a warning about deceptive pricing practices by some major retailers.
PROFECO head Ricardo Sheffield revealed that popular chains like Liverpool,Walmart, and Elektra were found to have increased prices on select items during the promotional period, misleading consumers who believed they were getting genuine discounts.
Sheffield cited specific examples, highlighting a T-Fal blender at Liverpool that jumped from 1,236 pesos to 1,649 pesos. At Elektra, a Mabe Silver refrigerator saw its price surge from 6,999 pesos to 10,499 pesos, while a Mabe 18 kg washing machine at Walmart climbed from 8,990 pesos to 9,990 pesos.
“These price increases are a clear deception of consumers who trusted these retailers to offer genuine deals during Buen Fin,” Sheffield stated.
However, not all retailers engaged in such practices. Sheffield commended companies like Sears and Bodega Aurrerá for implementing fair pricing strategies. Sears slashed the price of an 86-inch LG television from 39,999 pesos to 19,995 pesos and reduced a 30-inch Whirlpool washing machine from 15,299 pesos to 8,414 pesos. Bodega Aurrerá also offered a significant discount on a 55-inch Samsung television, dropping the price from 9,999 pesos to 6,890 pesos.
PROFECO has been monitoring price fluctuations since September, allowing them to identify these irregularities during Buen Fin. The agency urged consumers to remain vigilant and report any suspected price gouging to ensure that promotions truly benefit shoppers.
