Priest Seriously Injured in Assault at Downpatrick Church

A priest is in serious condition following a brutal assault at St patrick’s Church in Downpatrick,County Down,earlier today. The attack, which occurred shortly before the 10:30 am Mass, has shocked the local community and prompted a police examination.
Details of the attack
Police responded to reports of an assault at St patrick’s Church on St Patrick’s Avenue at approximately 10:00 am. Initial reports indicate that Fr. John Murray was struck with a bottle, sustaining a serious head injury.
“This was a fully shocking and brutal attack and has left the priest with a serious head injury,” stated Detective Chief Inspector David McBurney.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) received a call to the church at around 10:22 am and provided immediate medical attention to Fr. Ongoing Police Investigation & Appeal for Information
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has launched a full investigation into the assault and is appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

“We are asking anyone who was in the vicinity of St Patrick’s Church this morning, or who may have any information that could assist our investigation, to contact us,” DCI McBurney added.
Seperate Incident in Marian Park
This incident comes after emergency services responded to another call in the marian Park area of downpatrick just before midnight last night. Details surrounding the Marian Park incident remain limited as it is currently being treated as an ongoing investigation.
Community Condemnation
The attack on Fr. Murray has been met with widespread condemnation from local political representatives and the wider community.
SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath described the assault as “disgraceful” and “particularly revolting” given that it occurred within a church. “This is a disgraceful attack on an elderly priest which has left him in a serious condition in hospital. For this to happen in the church is particularly disgusting and I have spoken to many members of the community who are shocked and upset that this has taken place,” he said. “My thoughts are with the priest and others impacted by this attack. I hope that he makes a quick recovery and that the person responsible is apprehended.”
SDLP Downpatrick Councillor Conor Galbraith visited the scene in Marian Park, stating, “This is a very challenging day for people in Downpatrick after these two incidents and I have visited the Marian Park area to show my support to those affected. This is an ongoing situation and I would ask people to give police time and space to carry out their investigations. People locally are devastated that this has happened on their doorsteps.”
The Downpatrick Family of Parishes released a statement confirming that Fr. Murray is receiving medical treatment and expressing their support during this difficult time.
