Hubei Daily News (Reporter Hai Bing, Correspondents Shuai Qingxi and Tao Huanjin) Starting from September 1, primary and secondary schools across the province will start classes one after another, and the first grade of primary school and the first grade of junior high school will use the newly revised unified textbooks on morality and law, Chinese, and history. Hubei Daily Omnimedia reporters visited and learned that the new version of the textbooks has obvious changes.

At the First Affiliated Primary School of Wuhan University, more than 440 new students participated in the welcoming activities full of ceremonial sense, officially became primary school students, and received new textbooks. Yang Huan, the head of the first grade of the school, said that the new version of the textbook pays more attention to strengthening the connection between kindergarten and primary school, adding “I go to school” to the catalog. In the teaching, role-playing and campus exploration will be designed to help students adapt to primary school life smoothly. At the same time, the textbook reduces the amount of literacy, optimizes the arrangement of literacy and writing, and slows down the learning slope at the beginning stage.

The revision of the textbooks also paid special attention to the overall consideration of hot issues of social concern, such as adjusting the number of pinyin units from two to three and increasing the teaching time by 1 to 2 weeks. Yang Huan said, “In teaching pinyin, we are more confident to tell children with no basic knowledge, ‘Don’t worry, take your time, the teacher will accompany you to learn together’.”

At the Foreign Languages School Affiliated to Wuhan University, students in Class 702 happily received new textbooks during the lunch break during military training. Under the guidance of Yang Yang, the head of the history teaching and research group and the seventh-grade history lesson preparation group, the students were pleasantly surprised to find that the “Yunxian people” from Shiyan, Hubei, were included in the chapter “Ancient Humans in my country” for the first time. Student Chen Zeyu said that he had visited the Yunxian skull fossil, one of the “treasures of the museum” at the Hubei Provincial Museum and was deeply impressed. Now that it appears in the history textbook, he feels particularly close and proud of the Jingchu culture.

Yang Yang said that the new version of the textbook keeps pace with the times, reflects the new achievements of historical research, and reflects the research results of the “Chinese Civilization Origin Exploration Project”. For example, the first lesson was renamed “Human Activities in Ancient Times”, adding Lantian people and Yunxian people to enrich my country’s century-old human history; introducing ancient DNA technology to study the origin of mankind and other contents. Give full play to the role of textbooks in implementing the fundamental task of cultivating morality and cultivating people, add “learning history and respecting morality”, involving Qu Yuan’s spirit of worrying about the country and the people, Zhuge Liang’s dedication to “devoting himself to his work until his death”, etc., and introduce the words and deeds of outstanding historical figures to enable students to understand reason and cultivate morality. At the same time, take into account both the teaching and learning, and pay attention to the guidance of learning methods, such as adding a timeline and learning methods.

It is understood that the Ministry of Education has previously issued a newly revised compulsory education curriculum plan and curriculum standards, which clearly stated that each subject should focus on cultivating students’ core literacy, emphasizing the need to highlight the subject’s thinking methods and inquiry methods, strengthen practice, and promote interdisciplinary thematic learning. The compilation concept, material selection, and arrangement methods of the three unified textbooks were revised based on this, further reflecting the people-oriented and literacy-oriented approach. The relevant person in charge of the Textbook Bureau of the Ministry of Education explained that the newly revised unified textbooks reflect several major changes: comprehensively and systematically promoting Xi Jinping’s new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics into textbooks; highlighting the cultural education function, further enriching the learning content of China’s excellent traditional culture, revolutionary culture, and advanced socialist culture; and further promoting national security education, rule of law education, and education on building a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation. Related major thematic education content is included in the textbooks. It is reported that starting from the beginning of the fall semester this year, the new version of the textbook will be used simultaneously in primary and junior high schools across the country, first in the starting grades, and covering all grades in the compulsory education stage within three years.
