Designed by Greek designer Christina Stambolian, the off-the-shoulder garment is currently on public display in London until September 24 before embarking on an international tour that includes stops in Hong Kong and Geneva. According to Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion, the dress represents a powerful act of personal expression and reclamation of narrative by the late royal.
Often dubbed the “revenge dress,” the garment was originally worn on June 29, 1994, to a Serpentine Gallery gala in London. That same evening, a television interview aired in which the then-Prince Charles acknowledged an extramarital affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles, who is now Queen Camilla. The timing and striking nature of the outfit turned it into an immediate fashion icon.
Exhibition Schedule and Auction Details
The dress is being offered as part of Sotheby’s Luxury Week series in New York. Auction specialists have placed a pre-sale estimate of 150 mil a 300 mil dólares on the lot, though experts note that items tied to the late princess frequently exceed their expected valuations.

Prior to the December 9 sale, the garment will be exhibited for prospective bidders and the public at Sotheby’s locations globally. The London exhibition opened on September 18 and runs through September 24.
This marks the first time the dress has been sold at auction since June 1997, when Diana cleared 79 of her iconic dresses from her wardrobe to raise funds for AIDS and cancer charities. During that original sale, the consignor acquired the piece, noting that her late husband immediately recognized its historical significance.
Fashion History and Public Legacy
According to historical accounts from the designer, Diana had kept the Stambolian creation in her closet for some time, initially considering it too daring for a royal figure. Facing intense media scrutiny on the night of the televised confession, she paired the silk cocktail dress with a sapphire choker necklace, black heels, and bright red nail polish.

The late Vogue editor Anna Harvey noted that Diana deliberately aimed for a striking visual impact, successfully departing from traditional royal expectations of modest attire. Tabloids cemented its nickname the following morning with headlines proclaiming that revenge was chic.
The upcoming sale follows other high-profile auctions of Diana’s wardrobe, including a red sheep-patterned sweater that fetched a record amount in 2023. A portion of the proceeds from the upcoming December sale will be donated to NHS Lothian Charity to support the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Scotland.
