Elvis Presley had a complicated relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Priscilla Presley, Elvis’s ex-wife, shared insights about their dynamic. The Netflix documentary Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley, released on November 13, highlights their relationship and the challenges they faced.

After returning from military service in 1960, Elvis became tied to a lengthy movie contract due to Colonel Parker’s influence. This connection led Elvis to turn down significant roles, such as in the 1976 film A Star Is Born, where Barbra Streisand wanted him as her co-star. Priscilla recalled that Colonel warned Elvis against taking the role, suggesting Barbra would dominate the project. Elvis later regretted this decision as he believed he could have excelled in that part.

Elvis expressed frustration over the movie roles he received, with his friend Jerry Schilling recounting a moment when Elvis threw a script across the room, declaring, “I’m not doing this.” While Colonel Parker cared for Elvis, it was clear that Elvis wanted to break free from the limitations imposed by him.

Priscilla stated, “Elvis wanted to do great movies, not the stupid ones.” She noted that Colonel did not truly understand Elvis, making it difficult for both her and Jerry to speak up. Despite their concerns, they felt unable to challenge Colonel Parker.

Priscilla and Elvis married when she was 21 and he was 32 after dating for six years. They divorced in 1972 amid rumors of infidelity. Tragically, Elvis passed away from a heart attack just a day after their divorce became final.
