Illinois Governor Pritzker Defends State Immigration Policies in⁣ Congressional Hearing

Illinois Gov. J.B. pritzker testified before a House committee Thursday, defending ‍the state’s immigration policies amid ongoing protests and national scrutiny⁢ of sanctuary cities. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee‌ hearing,chaired by⁤ Kentucky ⁤Rep.James ​Comer, also included Minnesota Gov.Tim walz and New ​York Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Comer, ⁤a vocal critic ‍of sanctuary policies, asserted that these policies shield “criminal illegal aliens.” ⁣He stated that governors of sanctuary⁢ states ⁣must be held accountable ⁤for prioritizing the protection of criminal illegal aliens over the safety of U.S. citizens.

Pritzker countered this⁣ characterization, emphasizing that the‌ Illinois Trust Act, which limits local law enforcement’s involvement in federal​ immigration enforcement, was ‍signed ‍into law⁤ by former ⁢Republican‍ Gov.⁣ Bruce Rauner. A Pritzker spokesperson stated the act complies ​with federal law and ‍ensures ⁤public safety by encouraging all residents, nonetheless of ⁢immigration status,⁢ to cooperate with law enforcement.

The Illinois Trust ‌act generally prohibits local law enforcement from participating in⁤ federal immigration enforcement actions. Pritzker also addressed the influx of approximately 50,000 migrants bused ⁢to Illinois by Texas, urging Congress to ⁣enact comprehensive immigration reform.

“Our ​border should be secured. The asylum process should be⁤ reformed. Law-abiding, hardworking, tax-paying people ‍who have been in this country for years⁣ should‌ have a path to citizenship,” Pritzker said in prepared remarks. “We can ⁢have‌ a ⁤secure border while also⁢ having real‍ immigration pathways‍ that⁤ allow ⁤people to come here, work, and support themselves on a reasonable timeline.Our prosperity⁤ and our national security demand it.”

The hearing coincides with ​ongoing immigration protests across the country. In Los Angeles,⁤ protests have led to numerous arrests and the deployment⁣ of the National Guard. Chicago has also seen protests, with multiple arrests‌ made earlier ​in the week.
