Private Schools Face Cuts Amid VAT Tax Impact

Updated June⁤ 21, 2025

Private schools‍ are beginning ‍to feel the pinch‍ from recent tax changes,⁣ with some ⁣considering job cuts and tuition hikes⁤ to stay afloat. The move comes after the Independent Schools Council reported that approximately 8,000 students were pulled from private education ahead⁤ of the new academic year in⁣ December.

Fettes College acknowledged the ‍challenges, stating that various factors have increased costs for all organizations, schools included. The college cited the recent imposition of VAT on school fees and the⁤ rise in national insurance contributions as notable headwinds.

“These headwinds⁢ obviously ⁤affect our⁢ families too and our parents need to be certain that we are taking the necessary decisions to⁤ run the school efficiently and to use their money effectively,” a⁢ Fettes College spokesman ⁣said.

The issue has‍ even reached⁤ the High ⁣Court, where a group‍ of families argued that the ⁤government’s tax infringed on pupils’ human rights. However, the court sided with⁢ the government, noting that ‍while the legislation⁣ does interfere with some human ⁢rights,⁤ ministers have a ⁤broad ⁣margin of discretion in ‍balancing the interests of those affected against the interests ⁣of those who may benefit from public funding.

The government has argued⁤ that removing VAT exemptions on private⁤ schools would ⁤benefit the broader education sector, notably the 94% of ⁤students in state ⁣schools.

Earlier ⁢this year, Sir ⁣James⁣ Dyson warned that VAT changes ⁢would force his school to take action to⁢ ensure it “does not become unaffordable for too many parents.”

What’s next

Private schools will likely continue ‍to seek ways to mitigate the financial impact of the tax changes, while parents and educators⁢ brace ⁢for potential further ⁤adjustments in the sector.
