Priyanka Gandhi achieved a significant victory in the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll, receiving over six lakh votes. She won with a margin of more than 4.1 lakh votes against her opponent, Sathyan Mokeri from the Communist Party of India. This victory marked her in surpassing the previous record held by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, who won by a margin of 3.65 lakh votes in 2024.
Following her win, Priyanka visited Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, thanking him for his support during the campaign. She expressed her commitment to addressing local and national issues in the upcoming Parliament session. Priyanka shared her excitement on social media, stating she felt overwhelmed by the love and trust placed in her by the Wayanad electorate. She acknowledged her family’s support, particularly her brother Rahul, calling him her greatest inspiration.
In other election outcomes, Congress candidate Rahul Mamkootathil secured the Palakkad seat, defeating BJP’s C Krishnakumar by 18,840 votes. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) also celebrated a win with U R Pradeep taking the Chelakkara Assembly bypoll by 12,000 votes.
These by-elections hold importance for Congress as they reflect the party’s efforts to bounce back after recent setbacks in states like Haryana. The campaign focused on local issues such as farmers’ struggles and rehabilitation following landslides. The results will help gauge the Congress party’s standing and influence within the broader INDIA coalition.
