BELAGUA,Spain – Stage 10 of the Vuelta a España took an unexpected adn perilous turn on Tuesday as pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted the race, causing a collision that sent Intermarché-Wanty rider simone Petilli tumbling to the ground. The incident occurred during the 175km stage to Belagua, as dozens of flag-waving protesters surged toward the approaching peloton. Despite police efforts to hold them back, several activists broke through and charged into the path of the speeding cyclists.
Amidst the chaos, Petilli was knocked off his bike as riders swerved and braked to avoid the demonstrators. Fortunately, the Italian rider did not sustain any serious injuries and was able to complete the stage, finishing 100th overall. Neither Petilli nor his team have released a statement.
This disruption marks the latest in a series of incidents targeting the Vuelta a España, with activists specifically protesting the participation of Israel-Premier Tech. The team, owned by israeli investor sylvan Adams, has become a focal point for demonstrations against the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Last week, protesters disrupted the team time trial in Figueres, forcing IPT riders to slow down or come to a complete stop. In response, the team has been avoiding pre-stage sign-ins and refraining from speaking to the media.
As the race moves into the Basque Country for Wednesday’s stage 11, tensions remain high. Left-wing political parties EH Bildu and Podemos have publicly called for further protests during the stage around Bilbao.
Race officials have acknowledged the right to protest but have urged activists to refrain from disrupting the peloton, emphasizing the importance of rider safety.
