Michal Probierz has stepped down as Poland’s national team manager. The resignation follows reports that star striker Robert Lewandowski expressed unwillingness to play for the national team under Probierz’s leadership. This managerial change also comes after Poland’s recent 2-1 defeat against Finland in a World Cup qualifier.
Lewandowski, Poland’s all-time leading scorer with 85 goals in 158 appearances, reportedly quit the national team Sunday after Probierz replaced him as captain with Piotr Zielinski. The loss to Finland further elaborate Poland’s chances in World Cup qualification. They currently sit third in their group with six points, trailing Finland and the Netherlands.

“I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach,” Probierz said.
