While the study found tentative evidence that probiotic supplementation might improve working memory, the researchers emphasize the need for larger studies to confirm these findings.
“This is a promising first step, but more research is needed to fully understand the potential of probiotics and prebiotic-rich diets for enhancing cognitive function,” Freijy explained.

The study found that probiotic supplementation showed the most promising, albeit modest, effect on cognition. Participants in the probiotic group demonstrated a slight improvement in working memory compared to the placebo group.
“Though, the evidence remains inconclusive until replicated in larger studies, ideally with more complex measures of cognition,” said lead researcher Tanya Freijy.
Unexpected Findings for Prebiotics and Synbiotics
Surprisingly, the prebiotic-rich diet showed weak evidence of impairing processing speed, a measure of how quickly and accurately participants responded to simple tasks.The prebiotic group performed slightly worse than the placebo group,although researchers believe this finding may be due to chance rather than a true negative effect.
The synbiotic group, which combined probiotics and the prebiotic diet, did not show any clear synergistic or additive effect on cognitive function.
Future Research Needed
The researchers acknowledge several limitations to the study, including the relatively small sample size and the fact that the study was not specifically designed to measure cognitive effects.
