Seton Hall University’s School of Diplomacy has appointed Claudia Abate as its current Sergio Vieira de Mello Visiting Chair for the fall academic term, bringing a senior United Nations adviser with more than 33 years of practical international experience to the campus. Abate opened her course, Art and Science of Negotiation, with a traditional UN moment of silence and a screening of the 2005 documentary Sergio Vieira de Mello: En Route to Baghdad,
honoring the legacy of the late UN High Commissioner for Human Rights who died in a 2003 terrorist bombing.
Practical Diplomacy and Field Experience in the Classroom
Abate brings decades of multilateral expertise to Seton Hall following a career that includes 13 years as a conference officer organizing Security Council and General Assembly meetings, as well as service as Senior Advisor to the Council of Presidents of the UN General Assembly. Her field assignments include observing the 2001 elections in Fiji and witnessing the birth of Timor-Leste as an independent republic. While working in Timor-Leste, Abate crossed paths with Sergio Vieira de Mello, an encounter she credits with shaping her professional trajectory. Sergio represents the best of the UN in Timor-Leste,
Abate noted regarding her appointment.
Beyond traditional conference diplomacy, Abate’s career extends into humanitarian development and sports administration. She helped establish the Foundation for Post-Conflict Development, which built Timor-Leste’s first maternity clinic with backing from Prince Albert of Monaco, creating a model later adopted into the nation’s strategic development plan. She also served as a policy advisor and representative for the International Olympic Committee at the United Nations.
Student Engagement and the SHU Embasea Podcast Project
Students under Abate’s instruction examine how negotiation operates across diplomacy, humanitarian response, post-conflict recovery, sports, and UN operations. As a core component of the curriculum, students collaborate on a podcast titled SHU Embasea
—a nod to the sea and Seton Hall’s Pirate mascot—where each student matches with a professional field practitioner, ranging from ambassadors to civil society leaders. These pairings produce 15-minute episodes bridging academic literature with real-world practice, with resulting transcripts compiled into a class booklet.
Reflecting on her journey from a child collecting donations for UNICEF during Halloween trick-or-treating to a senior UN adviser, Abate encourages students to maintain perseverance amid global challenges.
