A leading Australian cardiovascular researcher, Professor Anthony Rodgers, has been awarded the 2025 Ministerial Award for Cardiovascular Research Excellence. Professor Rodgers, who has authored over 600 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious medical journals including The Lancet, JAMA, NEJM, and BMJ, has also secured more than $100 million in competitive research grants throughout his 30-year career. However, the award specifically acknowledges his success in translating complex research into practical, real-world solutions for patients.
His most notable achievement centers around the development of a low-dose triple combination pill for hypertension. Professor Rodgers spearheaded the project from its initial conceptualization through to its global impact. The therapy received FDA approval in 2025 and was subsequently added to the World Health Organization (WHO) Essential Medicines List – a critical step in ensuring access to vital medications worldwide.
Beyond its approval as a treatment for high blood pressure, the combination pill has demonstrated promising results in stroke prevention.
