LIBOURNE, France – A teacher at Jean-Monnet high school in Libourne is facing prosecution after allegedly fabricating racist death threats against herself, a case that has roiled the school community and prompted increased police presence.
The teacher, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody April 29 and formally charged April 30, according to Libourne Prosecutor Loïs Raschel. The charges stem from alleged death threats discovered in letters left at the school on multiple occasions: Dec. 4, 2023, Sept. 4,2024,and Nov. 12, 2024. The letters prompted an investigation by the Libourne research brigade into threats against a person responsible for public mission as of race, ethnicity, or religion.
Investigation Uncovers Alleged Deception
Raschel said in a statement April 30 that initial investigative efforts failed to identify a suspect. Though, new threats sent via a third student’s mobile phone on April 10 led investigators to a breakthrough.
Authorities traced the SIM card used to send the threatening text messages to a specific location. According to raschel, video surveillance showed the teacher purchasing a mobile operator card shortly before the messages were sent.
Further investigation revealed the phone used to send the messages was purchased in June 2024 using the teacher’s bank card. A handwriting analysis of the threatening letters also concluded the teacher was the author, according to investigators.
During questioning, the teacher admitted to sending the text messages but disputed the handwriting analysis linking her to the letters, Raschel said.
Court date Set, Teaching Ban Imposed
Following her detention, the prosecutor’s office decided to prosecute the teacher in the Libourne Criminal Court on charges of false reporting and aggravated fraud against the Bordeaux Academy rectorate. Her court date is set for Oct. 14.
As part of her judicial control, the teacher is prohibited from appearing at the high school and from engaging in any teaching activities.
The Bordeaux Academy rectorate released a statement expressing “greatest stupor” at the allegations against the teacher. The rectorate affirmed its support for the Jean-Monnet educational team. A psychological support unit will be available for teachers and students when the school year resumes May 5.
Teacher protection is and will remain a priority for the academy when they are victims of violence.

community Reacts to Allegations
Libourne Mayor Philippe Buisson addressed the situation on his Facebook page, referencing the climate of anxiety caused by the threats. He stated that if the allegations are true, it would be good news that no student or staff member sent racist, sexist, or xenophobic messages.
Buisson added that if the teacher is found guilty, she should be “severely sanctioned.”
The October hearing is expected to explore the teacher’s motives, described as someone who loved her job and was considered benevolent toward her students, with whom she reportedly had no prior issues.
