EU Politicians Defend LGBTQ+ Rights at Budapest Pride
Updated June 27, 2025
A delegation of European politicians, including about 70 members of the left, Renew, the Greens, and the Socialists and Democrats, gathered in Budapest to support LGTBIQ rights at a Pride event. The gathering occurred amid restrictions imposed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government.
Kata Tüttő, president of the European Committee of the Regions, called for remembrance of Budapest and Hungary‘s history. She noted that June 28 marks not only Pride but also “The Day of Freedom,” commemorating the departure of Soviet troops in 1991. Mayor Gergely Karáscany echoed this sentiment, stating, “Budapest has always fought for its freedom because it is a free city.”
Following these remarks, a conversation took place with activists Dajana Bakić, president of Rainbow Rose, and Dorottya Rédai, director of the Hungarian Association Labrisz Lesbian. The discussion was moderated by Social Democrats vice president, Ana Catarina Mendes.
