Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, 39, a former contestant on “Project Runway,” died after being shot at a No Kings Rally in Salt Lake City on saturday. The fashion designer was caught in crossfire and later died at a local hospital, authorities said Sunday. He leaves behind his wife and two young children.
The anti-Trump rally turned deadly when Arturo Gamboa, 24, allegedly brandished a weapon at the crowd. Reports indicate that Gamboa ignored orders to drop the gun and instead ran toward the crowd. A peacekeeping team then opened fire, and Ah Loo was struck. Gamboa is now in custody on a murder charge, though his motive remains unclear.
Ah Loo appeared on “Project Runway” in 2019. Beyond his television appearance, he founded the Creative Pacific Foundation, where he taught sewing skills in workshops.
A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $173,000 to support Ah Loo’s family. The page describes him as a “beloved husband” and notes the profound void his death leaves in the lives of his wife, Laura, and their children, Vera and isaac. The funds will help cover funeral expenses and ease immediate financial burdens.
Utah Rep. Verona Mauga, who was present at the rally but not with ah Loo when the shooting occurred, remembered him as a champion for equality.
“Afa is a person who believed in equity and equality for all people and all communities,” mauga told KSL TV. “He believed that everyone was deserving of basic human rights. And that’s why he was there…He brought joy and laughter to the community, and he shared his art and his talents so freely with people.”
What’s next
Police continue to investigate the shooting and Gamboa’s motives. The community is mourning the loss of Ah Loo and supporting his family through the GoFundMe campaign.
