Szentendre Braces for Traffic as Highway 11 Renovation Finally begins
Szentendre, Hungary – After years of anticipation and a few false starts, the long-awaited renovation of Highway 11 in Szentendre is finally set to begin. The project, focused on the stretch between Rózsa Street and Pap-Island, promises a smoother, safer commute for the tens of thousands who rely on this vital artery.
The news comes after Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár pledged to renew the main road section back in May during a visit to Szentendre. According to government spokesperson Eszter Vitályos, the construction contract was signed at the end of September, with the workspace officially handed over on October 10th. Construction is slated to commence on Monday,October 13th.
While the renovation aims to improve the overall driving experience, residents should prepare for significant disruptions.Vitályos cautioned that temporary traffic management techniques, including minor restrictions and diversions, will be in place throughout the construction period. The goal, she emphasized, is to minimize inconvenience while prioritizing safety and creating a more convenient road surface.
highway 11 is a critical transportation link for the region, and its current state has been a source of frustration for commuters. The need for renovation was recognized as far back as early 2021, but the project faced delays.
the road’s condition even became a point of contention during the lead-up to the 2022 elections.
Looking ahead, the renovation is expected to bring about considerable challenges. In 2023, when the Highway 11 and HÉV (local railway) renovation projects were temporarily shelved, Mayor Zsolt Fülöp warned that the road construction would likely result in “at least one and a half years” of congestion.
With an estimated 50,000 vehicles using Highway 11 daily, the reduction in capacity during construction is a major concern. depending on the specific work being carried out, the road’s daily capacity could be reduced to as little as 15,000 cars.
While the short-term pain of traffic delays is unavoidable, the long-term benefits of a renovated Highway 11 - increased safety,a smoother ride, and improved traffic flow – are expected to outweigh the temporary inconvenience. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about traffic updates and plan their commutes accordingly.
