Prostate Health: Prevention is the Best Defense
Men’s health, particularly prostate care, remains a sensitive topic for many, leading to alarmingly low rates of preventative screenings. Despite advances in treatment options, experts emphasize that prevention is key. Onyl 30% of men follow adequate preventative measures, according to Italy’s Ministry of Health.
“this is the most current and critical issue,” says Francesco Greco, Professor of Urology at the University of Vienna and Director of the Centro Salute Uomo in Bergamo. “Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, but too few are taking steps to protect themselves.”
Why the hesitation?
“Women are much more prepared for prevention as they become familiar with their bodies from a young age, frequently enough through better communication with their mothers,” Greco explains. “Men don’t talk about it with their fathers, who themselves rarely practice prevention.”
When should men start being proactive?
The common advice to begin screenings at age 50 is too late. Preventative care should begin at 18, mirroring recommendations for women. This early start addresses not only potential cancers, like testicular cancer, but also sexually transmitted infections and fertility concerns. varicocele, a common diagnosis, can impact fertility if left untreated. A lack of comprehensive sex education contributes to the problem, with deficiencies in both schools and families.
