Benoni, South Africa – Despite a heavy 53-run defeat in the final T20 International against Pakistan on Monday night, the South African women’s cricket team clinched the three-match series 2-1. The consolation win for Pakistan, played at Willowmoore Park, provided a lift for the visitors ahead of the upcoming ODI series.

The Proteas had already secured the series victory with wins in the first two matches in Potchefstroom and Benoni. However, Monday’s performance was a stark contrast, marked by a disappointing batting display and fielding lapses, as noted by captain Laura Wolvaardt after the match.

Pakistan posted a competitive total of 144-7, largely thanks to an unbeaten 47 off 30 balls from captain Fatima Sana. Sana rescued the innings after Pakistan found themselves struggling at 68-5 in the 12th over. Her innings included four boundaries and two sixes, providing crucial late momentum.

In response, the Proteas’ chase faltered dramatically from the outset. They were reduced to 30-4 by the fifth over and were eventually all out for 91, effectively ending their hopes of a clean sweep. The early wickets proved too much to overcome, and the middle order couldn’t build a substantial partnership to revive the innings.

Adding to South Africa’s woes, star all-rounder Marizanne Kapp was unable to bat due to illness. Kapp had bowled three overs earlier in the match, conceding only 11 runs, demonstrating her impact with the ball before being forced off the field. Her absence from the batting lineup was a significant blow.

“That was a disappointing way to end the series. I think we’ve been playing some very good cricket but lost our way today,” Wolvaardt said, reflecting on the team’s performance. “I think we bowled pretty well, but our fielding let us down again, which was something we wanted to be a lot better at today, but I don’t think we quite did that.”

The match saw disciplined bowling and sharp fielding from Pakistan, highlighted by three run-outs that significantly impacted the Proteas’ innings. Nashra Sandu’s run-out of Annerie Dercksen for 30 in the 15th over proved particularly crucial, breaking a 55-run fifth-wicket partnership that offered some resistance.

Nadine de Klerk contributed 27 runs before being dismissed by Ayesha Riaz, and the remaining wickets fell quickly as the Proteas attempted to accelerate the scoring. The team lost their last three wickets for just five runs, highlighting the collapse in the latter stages of the innings.

While the T20 series concludes with a loss, the Proteas will need to address the issues exposed in this final match as they prepare for the ODI series against Pakistan, which begins in Bloemfontein on Sunday. The ODI series presents a new challenge, and the Proteas will be aiming for a similarly successful outcome.

The series win, however, wasn’t without its challenges. The Proteas needed a last-ball victory in the first T20, and they allowed Pakistan to gain momentum in subsequent matches despite having them under pressure. This suggests a need for greater consistency and composure throughout the innings, both with the bat and in the field.

Fatima Sana’s performance with both bat and ball was a key factor in Pakistan’s victory. Her unbeaten innings provided a much-needed boost to the Pakistan total, and her leadership was evident throughout the match. The win will undoubtedly boost Pakistan’s confidence as they head into the ODI series.

The Citizen reported that despite the defeat, the South African team secured a 2-1 series victory. The article also highlighted the struggles of the Proteas’ top order, which fell apart in the powerplay, leaving them stranded at 30/4 in the fifth over.

East Coast Radio noted that Khaka and Wolvaardt guided the Proteas Women to an unassailable T20I series lead, emphasizing the importance of their contributions in the first two matches. However, the final match demonstrated that the team needs to maintain that level of performance consistently.

Cape Town ETC reported that Wolvaardt kept her cool as the Proteas sealed series control, highlighting her leadership and composure throughout the series. This leadership will be crucial as the team looks to address the issues exposed in the final T20 and prepare for the challenges of the ODI series.
