Protecting the Digital Generation: Kang Kyung-sook Calls for Urgent Action Against Online Crime
Sexual Exploitation Conversations on the Rise: 126 Cases Reported in 2024
According to recent data, the number of cases of sexually exploitative conversations has increased by 1.7 times, from 73 cases in 2023 to 126 cases in July 2024. Alarmingly, 86% of the victims were under the age of 15.
The data, received from the National Police Agency by the office of Rep. Kang Kyung-sook, a member of the National Assembly Education Committee, reveals that 102 arrests were made in connection with these cases. This surge in cases highlights the growing concern of digital sex crimes, particularly those involving conversations for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
The age group of suspects in these crimes is predominantly between 19 and 30 years old, accounting for 67.7% of the total. In contrast, the majority of victims are under the age of 15, with 34 cases reported in this age group.
The Supreme Court recently ruled in a landmark case, finding a man in his 40s guilty of sending sexual messages to a 10-year-old girl through internet chat. This ruling sets a precedent for the prosecution of similar cases and highlights the need for increased measures to prevent digital sex crimes.
Rep. Kang Kyung-sook emphasized the need for active responses and measures to prevent young people from being exposed to crimes in online spaces, such as the metaverse. The Act on the Protection of Children and Adolescents from Sexual Abuse stipulates that anyone who engages in conversations that may induce sexual desire, shame, or disgust in children or adolescents through an information and communications network for the purpose of sexual exploitation shall be punished by imprisonment for not more than 3 years or a fine not exceeding 30 million won.
The rise in sexual exploitation conversations is a pressing concern that requires immediate attention and action. It is essential to educate the public about the risks of digital sex crimes and to implement effective measures to prevent and prosecute these crimes.
