According to reporting from Harvard Health published September 6, 2024, this condition affects approximately 5% to 13% of individuals between the ages of 60 and 70. The prevalence increases sharply with age, affecting up to 50% of people who are 80 years or older.
Maintaining muscle mass is critical because strong muscles are more efficient at harvesting nutrients and oxygen from the blood. They burn more calories than weak muscles, which assists in weight control.
Risks Associated With Muscle Loss
The loss of muscle mass is closely linked to a higher incidence of falls and an increased likelihood of breaking bones. Beyond physical injuries, sarcopenia is associated with several severe health complications.
Individuals with sarcopenia may face a higher risk of post-operative complications and longer hospital stays. The condition is also linked to cognitive impairment, metabolic disorders and increased mortality.
Together, these factors can diminish a person’s independence and make it more difficult to age in place safely.
Causes and Physiological Decline
Muscle loss is a gradual process that typically begins around age 30. For most people, this involves a decline of approximately 3% to 5% of muscle mass each decade.

Physiologically, this occurs as the number and size of muscle fibers shrink, which causes the muscles to thin, a process known as atrophy.
While aging is an unavoidable cause, several other factors can accelerate muscle loss, including:
- Inactivity and sedentary lifestyles
- Obesity and insulin resistance
- Malnutrition and inadequate protein intake
Certain medical conditions are also linked to the loss of muscle mass, including cancer, metabolic disorders, liver disease, and kidney dysfunction.
The Role of Nutrition and Protein
Dietary protein is a primary factor in combating sarcopenia. A literature review published in Nutrients in February 2021 indicates that higher dietary protein intake of up to 1.2 g/kg of body weight per day may help prevent sarcopenia and maintain musculoskeletal health in older adults.
Inadequate protein intake is identified as a key contributor to the acceleration of muscle loss as people age.
While protein is central to muscle maintenance, it is not the only nutritional requirement. Harvard Health has noted that there are at least six other nutrients beyond protein that assist in the prevention of muscle loss.
Combining Diet With Physical Activity
Nutrition alone is often insufficient to reverse or fully stop muscle loss. In a report from August 14, 2024, Harvard Health emphasized that strength training is necessary to build muscle and combat sarcopenia.
Because building new muscle requires protein, combining strength training with an optimized protein intake is a key strategy for preserving muscle mass and function during the aging process.
