Updated June 26, 2025
Providence, a 51-hospital system, is implementing a new strategic direction through 2030, emphasizing technology adoption to streamline care delivery.CEO Erik Wexler said the plan includes leveraging technology, expanding partnerships, and increasing the use of artificial intelligence to reduce administrative burdens. Progress will be tracked starting in 2027.
Wexler said the strategic plan should help the system navigate economic, legislative, technological and societal pressures facing healthcare. Initiatives include reducing wait times, increasing self-scheduling, and deepening commitment to value-based care. The system also plans to revamp acute and post-acute care with more virtual, ambulatory, and in-home options.
Providence intends to use Microsoft Copilot and ambient scribing technology to save clinicians time. Strengthening digital connections among partners for seamless information sharing and further investment in specialty pharmacy care are also planned.
The health system’s Office of Transformation, formed in January, will carry out some of these tasks, according to Wexler. The announcement comes shortly after Providence eliminated 600 roles in a restructuring effort. Like many systems,Providence has been working to improve its financial standing amid economic challenges and regulatory uncertainty.
Providence has been pursuing a financial turnaround for several years, initially aiming for profitability by 2025. Though, external factors, including potential funding cuts, have presented ongoing challenges. Cost-cutting measures this year have included freezing nonclinical hiring and reducing discretionary spending.
Wexler said these changes have helped providence address short-term challenges. The new strategic plan aims to move the system beyond survival mode toward enduring growth.
What’s next
providence will continue implementing its strategic plan, focusing on technology and partnerships to improve patient care and financial stability.
