Ambient Speech Improves EHR Experience and Reduces Burnout
Updated June 30, 2025
A recent report indicates that using ambient speech solutions is significantly improving the Electronic Health Record (EHR) experience for health care providers while also combating burnout. The study, “Ambient Speech Outcomes 2025,” analyzed data from over 900 physicians and advanced practice providers. It suggests the technology refocuses attention on patient care and enhances clinician well-being.
Fueled by advances in generative AI, ambient speech technology has seen rapid adoption, with many health organizations piloting various solutions. The report drew data from ambulatory care providers across 24 organizations using Epic EHRs and several ambient speech vendors, including Microsoft DAX Copilot, Abridge, Ambience Healthcare, DeepScribe, and Nabla.
Providers using ambient speech for a large portion of their documentation reported greater satisfaction with their EHR experience. The study showed positive impacts across several key metrics. For example, providers agreeing that the EHR is “easy to learn” increased by 12 percentage points among ambient speech adopters, compared to a 4-point increase for non-adopters. Similarly, agreement that the EHR “enables efficiency” rose by 13 points for adopters, versus 6 points for those not using the technology. The percentage of providers agreeing the EHR “enables patient-centered care” also increased by 13 points for adopters, compared to a 6-point increase for non-adopters. Adopters also reported a 10-point increase in agreement that the EHR has “needed functionality” and a 13-point increase in “fast system response time.”
Clinicians value that ambient speech allows them to engage more directly with patients, freeing them from the burden of note-taking.This reduces charting time, allowing more focus on patient care activities, and leads to more thorough notes and better follow-through, ultimately resulting in higher provider satisfaction.
Ambient speech is also proving effective in alleviating burnout. The study found a 10 percentage-point reduction in burnout among providers who adopted ambient speech, with no comparable change for non-adopters. Adopters also saw a 12 percentage-point reduction in the number of providers citing after-hours workload as a contributor to burnout, and an 11 percentage-point reduction in those citing EHR inefficiency as a burnout factor. Furthermore, providers using ambient speech showed a 9 percentage-point increase in agreement that their organization supports the EHR well, representing a 2.3 times higher advancement compared to non-adopters.
While burnout is complex, ambient speech, when well-implemented,can significantly improve providers’ lives. Some physicians reported a wholly improved quality of life at work after adopting ambient speech, expressing gratitude for gaining work-life balance. Research suggests that reducing physician burnout can yield financial benefits, estimated at roughly $87,000 per physician in terms of reduced turnover and
