Promoting Longevity Through Preventative Health
Providing support and care for others is linked to a longer lifespan. Research suggests individuals with strong social connections live an average of twelve years longer than those with diabetes,high cholesterol,or high blood pressure,conditions which typically manifest around age 70. these risk factors significantly increase the likelihood of cardiovascular diseases,including heart failure,and stroke.
Free Risk Assessments Available to Merzig Residents
The “Heart Life Way” initiative,in collaboration with SHG clinics Merzig and with the support of the city of Merzig,recently offered free health risk assessments to the public. The initiative utilized a distinctive red London double-decker bus as a mobile health clinic.
Comprehensive Health Checks Conducted Onsite
The six-member SHG team conducted pulse and blood pressure measurements, as well as blood sugar and cholesterol level tests on interested individuals. Participants also completed a questionnaire detailing their personal risk factors. Following the tests, individuals consulted with either neurologist Professor Dr. Matthias Strittmatter or internist and cardiologist Dr. Franz-Theo Nohr for personalized risk analysis and health recommendations.
Discussions focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and identifying potential adjustments to improve quality of life, with guidance on how to discuss these with their family doctor. Boehringer Ingelheim supplemented the initiative with informational materials on diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. senior physician Michael Bossmann also provided first aid knowledge refreshers.
Over 100 Residents Participate in Health initiative
More than 100 people took advantage of the SHG clinics’ offer on the day of the event, with some learning about the campaign through press coverage and others drawn in by the bus’s visibility in the pedestrian zone near Merzig’s historic town hall. Merzig’s Mayor Marcus Hoffeld also participated, receiving a clean bill of health.
