PS Activists Gather in Charleroi for Labor Day

Paul Magnette, president of the Parti Socialiste (PS), delivered a critical address to party members in Charleroi on May 1, 2026, during the annual Labor Day celebrations. Magnette targeted the Arizona government, claiming its current fiscal and social trajectory is unsustainable.

The PS leader, who has been in the opposition for one year, issued a stark warning regarding the financial stability of the Arizona administration. During his speech, Magnette asserted that the deficit will double and the debt will explode.

Criticism of Social and Fiscal Policy

Magnette accused the Arizona government of implementing measures that negatively impact the most vulnerable segments of the population. He stated that the administration’s policies compress the workers and oppress the pensioners. He further alleged that while these groups face pressure, those at the top of the economic scale are being spared.

The president of the PS characterized the current situation as a period where the government is pursuing a policy of austerity and social dismantling within a climate of recession. He contrasted these developments with the claims of prosperity made by other political figures.

Specifically, Magnette referenced a book on prosperity recently published by Prime Minister Bart De Wever. While acknowledging the act of writing, Magnette argued that taking actions that actually create prosperity is more important, claiming that current figures show the opposite of prosperity is occurring.

Political Context and Contrasting Visions

The address in Charleroi took place alongside other political events on May 1. In Blegny, the president of the Mouvement Réformateur (MR), Georges Bouchez, delivered a contrasting speech focused on the energy of growth. Bouchez advocated for a smaller state and increased purchasing power.

In response to the current governance, Magnette stated that in 14 months, the administration has not yet managed to resolve all the pressing issues. He framed his political objective as a necessity to return and reconstruct.
