PS5 Power Saver Update: Battery Drain Trade-off
PS5 Power Saver Mode Arrives: Save Energy, But What’s the Catch?
Table of Contents
Sony is rolling out a new PS5 system update that introduces a highly anticipated “Power Saver” mode. This feature aims to reduce the console’s energy consumption, aligning with Sony’s broader environmental initiatives. However, this energy-saving comes with a trade-off: scaled-back performance.
Understanding the New Power Saver Feature
The Power Saver mode, accessible through the PS5’s console settings, allows supported games to “scale back performance and will allow your PS5 to reduce it’s power consumption,” according to Shuzo Kikuchi, VP of product management at Sony Interactive Entertainment. If a game doesn’t support the feature, or if power Saver is not enabled, performance will remain unaffected, and power consumption will not be reduced.
What Does “Scaled-Back Performance” Mean?
Sony has clarified that enabling Power Saver mode will result in the unavailability of VR mode. Additionally, “some gameplay features might potentially be limited.” while one change is very specific (VR mode), the mention of “game-specific” limitations suggests that the impact on gameplay could vary from title to title. This means players might experience reduced frame rates, lower graphical fidelity, or other performance adjustments to achieve the energy savings.
Environmental Goals and Potential Handheld Integration
This new mode is part of Sony’s 2010 “Road to Zero” environmental initiative, a commitment to reducing the company’s environmental footprint. By sacrificing some gaming performance, the PS5 can considerably lower its power draw. This development also sparks speculation about Sony’s rumored handheld PS5 device. A power-saving feature like this could be incredibly beneficial for a portable gaming experience, extending battery life and making on-the-go play more viable.
DualSense Controller Enhancements: Multi-Device Connectivity
Beyond the Power Saver mode, the PS5 system update beta also brings a important quality-of-life betterment for DualSense controller users. Previously, players had to manually reconnect and re-pair their controllers to different devices. Now, the DualSense can be paired with up to four devices simultaneously. This allows for seamless switching between platforms such as PCs, Macs, and mobile phones, enabling “gaming more freely across multiple devices.”
Beta Access and Global Rollout
The new PS5 system update beta is currently limited to invited participants in select countries. those selected for the beta will receive an email from Sony on Thursday, July 24, with instructions on how to get started. Sony plans to release the update globally in the coming months, making these new features available to all PS5 owners.
