Next-Gen Consoles: Xbox and PlayStation 6 Eye AMD for Power
updated June 23, 2025
The next generation of gaming consoles is already taking shape. Xbox recently announced a partnership with AMD to power its successor to the Xbox Series X|S,focusing on a ubiquitous gaming platform. Sony Interactive Entertainment, simultaneously occurring, is prioritizing local gaming experiences with the PlayStation 6.
Xbox President Sarah Bond confirmed the AMD deal in a video, stating that AMD will co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including next-generation Xbox consoles. The goal is to create an Xbox experience accessible on any device, not limited to a single store or console. This strategy relies heavily on cloud gaming, despite ongoing challenges with network infrastructure stability.
Sony Interactive Entertainment President Hideaki Nishino told investors that most gamers prefer local gaming without network dependency. He views cloud gaming as an “additional option.” Nishino also indicated that the PlayStation 6 is a primary focus for the company.
Industry insiders suggest that both the next-gen Xbox and the PlayStation 6 may be built on AMD’s UDNA architecture, essentially a rebranding of RDNA 5.The current PS5 and Xbox Series X use a combination of RDNA 1 and RDNA 2, while the PS5 Pro incorporates some RDNA 4 elements for ray tracing.
UDNA is expected to offer significant performance improvements, with 20% better rasterization and twice the ray tracing performance of RDNA 4. AMD announced RDNA 4 graphics cards in February, and the first UDNA gaming GPUs for PCs are slated for production next year, with a potential release in late 2026 or early 2027. The new consoles are anticipated to launch in late 2027 or 2028.
What’s next
The gaming world awaits further details on the specifications and release dates for both the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation 6. The competition between cloud-based and local gaming experiences will likely intensify as these consoles approach their launch windows.
