Stade Vélodrome showdown lifts PSG as Marseille struggles deepen

Missed chances define a tense first half

Entering the fixture under intense pressure as the provisional penultimate team in Ligue 1, Marseille contained early Paris Saint-Germain attacks and managed a strong defensive shape. Despite an early opportunity for Ousmane Dembélé in the 12th minute, the hosts suffered a setback when Paixao left the pitch injured at the 27-minute mark. Marseille created the clearest chance of the first half in the 38th minute, but Neal Maupay missed his close-range effort at the penalty spot. Warren Zaïre-Emery responded for Paris Saint-Germain in the 42nd minute with a shot that failed to trouble the scoreline before halftime.

Torres breaks the deadlock after the break

Paris Saint-Germain increased pressure after the interval, testing Marseille through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the 52nd minute, João Neves in the 57th minute, and Désiré Doué in the 61st minute. Maupay squandered another significant scoring opportunity in the 62nd minute by missing his left-footed shot. Moments later, Paris Saint-Germain broke the deadlock when Ferran Torres, who had entered the match six minutes prior, converted a cross from Désiré Doué with a powerful header at the near post in the 66th minute. The strike marked the Spanish international’s seventh goal in six appearances for the club.

Marquinhos restores the lead amid late drama

Marseille responded swiftly when newly introduced Angel Gomes equalized in the 72nd minute, dribbling past Willian Pacho before finishing past goalkeeper Matvey Safonov. The parity lasted only minutes as Paris Saint-Germain restored their lead in the 75th minute. Captain Marquinhos scored in two attempts past goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange following a setup by Nuno Mendes. The goal marked Marquinhos’s third tally of the campaign. Marseille finished the match with ten men after Timothy Weah received a second yellow card leading to a red card in the 77th minute for a foul on Nuno Mendes. Despite late pressure that included a stoppage-time chance for Nayef Aguerd in the 96th minute, Marseille failed to equalize.

Following the result, Luis Enrique’s squad sits five points behind league leaders Monaco after five matches, while Bruno Genesio’s Marseille side enters the international break inside the relegation zone alongside clubs such as Le Havre and Troyes.
