Paris Saint-Germain has officially closed a contentious legal battle with Kylian Mbappé, announcing on Friday, February 20, 2026, that it will not appeal a French labor court ruling ordering the club to pay the Real Madrid forward over €60 million in unpaid wages, and bonuses. The decision brings an end to a long-running dispute that stretched across Mbappé’s final season with the Parisian club and into his tenure with Real Madrid.

The labor court initially ruled in December that PSG owed Mbappé between €60 and €61 million, comprised of approximately €55 million in unpaid salary and around €6 million in accrued holiday pay. The ruling mandated payment within one month, even if PSG chose to appeal. Despite the significant financial burden, PSG has opted to forgo a further legal challenge.

“In the interest of responsibility and in order to put a definitive end to a procedure which has lasted too long, the club has chosen not to prolong this dispute,” PSG stated in an official release. The club’s lawyer, Renaud Semerdjian, further emphasized that PSG had already fulfilled its obligations, stating, “Contrary to the false claims of the player and his entourage, the club has fulfilled all its obligations, both in the publication of the ruling and in the full payment of the amounts owed.”

The origins of the dispute trace back to disagreements over bonus payments and salary owed to Mbappé during his seven seasons with PSG. The case took a particularly complex turn in November when Mbappé’s legal team initially demanded €263 million in damages, alleging “bully methods” used by the club to intimidate the player. PSG countered with a claim of €440 million, alleging bad faith on Mbappé’s part for reportedly concealing his intention not to renew his contract.

However, the court ultimately sided with Mbappé, reducing the demanded amount to €61 million. While PSG was expected to appeal the December ruling, the club’s decision to stand down marks a definitive resolution. The court found PSG liable for failing to pay Mbappé’s salary for three months, as well as owed ethics bonuses and signing bonuses as stipulated in his employment contract.

The timing of PSG’s decision coincides with Mbappé’s successful transition to Real Madrid, where he reportedly earns an annual salary of €30 million. He joined the Spanish giants in the summer of 2024, leaving behind a legacy of 256 goals in 308 appearances for PSG. Ironically, PSG secured their first-ever Champions League title last season, following Mbappé’s departure, a fact the club likely views as diminishing the impact of the financial settlement.

The resolution of this dispute allows both PSG and Mbappé to move forward without further legal entanglements. PSG can now fully concentrate on its sporting project and collective success, while Mbappé can focus entirely on his career with Real Madrid. The club’s statement underscored this sentiment, declaring that it is “now resolutely turned towards the future.”

The case highlights the increasing complexities of player contracts and the potential for significant financial repercussions for clubs failing to meet their obligations. While PSG initially contested the claims vigorously, the decision to ultimately accept the court’s ruling suggests a pragmatic approach to resolving the matter and avoiding further protracted legal battles. The financial implications, while substantial, are now settled, allowing both parties to close this chapter and pursue their respective ambitions.

The saga also underscores the power dynamics within modern football, where players, particularly those of Mbappé’s stature, are increasingly willing to assert their contractual rights through legal channels. This case may serve as a precedent for future disputes, encouraging greater diligence from clubs in ensuring full compliance with player agreements. The outcome is a clear signal that failing to meet contractual obligations can result in significant financial penalties, even for some of the world’s wealthiest football clubs.
