Increased Police Presence Leads to over 200 Arrests During Christmas Period in Portugal

Portuguese authorities have substantially increased road safety enforcement during the Christmas holiday season. As of the morning of December 24th, the Public Security Police (PSP) reported 204 arrests for road crimes, demonstrating a proactive approach to deterring risky driving behaviors.
Drunk Driving and licensing Issues Remain Primary Concerns
The majority of arrests - 140 – were related to driving under the influence of alcohol. An additional 64 individuals were arrested for operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license. These figures highlight the ongoing challenges related to impaired and unlicensed drivers on Portuguese roads.
Extensive Inspections and Thousands of Infractions
To bolster enforcement, PSP officers conducted inspections on 8,497 drivers and 35,387 vehicles using radar technology. these inspections resulted in 2,564 infractions of road traffic legislation.
Speeding and Vehicle Maintenance Top Offense List
Speeding was identified as the most common administrative offense, accounting for 367 of the total infractions. Other significant violations included 230 infractions for lacking mandatory periodic vehicle inspections, and 108 for driving without mandatory civil liability insurance.Distracted driving and safety restraint issues also contributed to the total, with 43 infractions for cell phone use while driving and 24 for improper seatbelt or child restraint system usage. An additional 58 infractions were issued for driving under the influence of alcohol during the inspections.
The PSP’s campaign, playfully referencing the Grinch, emphasizes the importance of safe driving practices during the festive season and aims to ensure a safe Christmas for all.
