The Partido del Trabajo (PT) has opened the door to accepting political aspirants who fail to secure internal nominations from Morena for the upcoming 2027 elections, raising the prospect of a split within the coalition, according to reports from La Jornada, El Universal, and Reforma.
Strained Alliance Ahead of 2027
Reginaldo Sandoval, coordinator of the PT deputies, criticized what he characterized as arrogant behavior by Morena during the internal selection process for coordinators of the Defense of the Transformation. Speaking at Palacio Nacional, Sandoval stated that his party has paused its participation in candidate selections alongside Morena. He added that the PT is waiting for mirror polls in states where disagreements exist, warning that the alliance could fracture if Morena fails to address their concerns. El Universal and El Financiero reported that the PT is hardening its stance as friction mounts between the allied parties. Sandoval outlined several potential scenarios for the upcoming electoral cycle, noting that the PT is prepared to run independently in multiple states, in all 17 contested gubernatorial races, or across the entire country if formal agreements cannot be reached.
Specific Contenders Targeted by the PT
