PTI Calls for Farmers Protest Amid Agriculture Sector Concerns
Updated June 12, 2025
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has voiced strong criticism of the government’s handling of the agriculture sector, calling for farmers to mobilize for a decisive protest movement. PTI leaders made these statements at a farmers’ convention held Wednesday, following the declaration of the federal budget.
While the government announced measures in the budget, including the decision not to impose a general sales tax (GST) on fertilizers and pesticides, farmers have deemed these steps insufficient, especially given the sector’s recent struggles.Last year saw a 13.5% reduction in major crop output, impacting overall GDP growth.
Barrister Gohar Khan, PTI chairman, addressed the convention along with Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and Central data Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram. Gohar Khan emphasized the agriculture sector’s vital role in the economy and the need for modernization to ensure food security. He promised that the PTI would combat the exploitation of growers and ensure their concerns are included in future budgets. The PTI is focusing on agriculture sector support, farmers rights, and protesting government policies.
Akram accused the Punjab government of targeting farmers who supported Imran Khan and the PTI in the last elections. He stated that Khan could call for protests at any time and that the nation has rejected the federal budget.
mr Gohar vowed that PTI would not tolerate the exploitation of farmers and assured that the party’s elected representatives “would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that farmers’ recommendations are incorporated into the budgets”.
