Public Enemy Drops Surprise Album, ‘Black Sky over the Projects’

Just ahead of thier international tour with Guns N’ Roses, Public Enemy surprised fans with a new album, Black Sky Over the Projects: Apartment 2025, released June 27. while the group is known for songs addressing social injustice and systemic racism, this album sees Chuck D and Flavor Flav focusing on the pitfalls of technology and ageism.
Chuck D said the album’s tracks, such as “Siick” and “Ageism,” reflect on the challenges of a technology-obsessed society and discrimination against older hip-hop artists. He emphasized the importance of addressing relevant topics, stating that artists should not shy away from speaking out beyond self-interest. the primary goal of this new album was to prove that he and Flavor Flav could still collaborate effectively.
The 12 tracks on Black Sky Over the Projects, a follow-up to 2020’s What you Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down?, are divided into two parts, similar to Outkast’s Speakerboxx/The Love Below. Chuck D explained that he and Flavor Flav worked separately with their respective teams before combining their efforts.This approach also served as a test of Flavor Flav’s commitment.
Hints of a new Public Enemy album emerged earlier this year when Chuck D appeared on Flavor Flav’s single, “Everywhere Man.” Despite their established chemistry from their days at Adelphi University, the duo had to resolve issues that led to their recent hiatus.
