A non-profit is working to increase portrayal for puerto Rican and other Latin artists in teh United States.
San Juan — In the cultural scene of the United States, Latin artists, notably Puerto Ricans, have strived for years to achieve the visibility and recognition they deserve on the nation’s prominent stages.Numerous non-profit organizations have dedicated critically important efforts to these objectives, including a Boston-based group that has facilitated positive change.
the organization’s work began with the realization of a lack of representation for latin artists.
There is an significant population of great Latin representation, but very little visibility in the world of arts and culture.
This realization led to the creation of the organization with the mission of changing that reality.
The first major initiative was the creation of “Croma Space,” a venue dedicated to promoting and showcasing Latin artists. The name alludes to the Tiffany stained glass windows of Arlington Street Church, where the organization is housed in the basement.
From there we began to produce visibility to those Latin artists. I always had in the head that Latin artists could reach spaces outside the communities and present themselves in large stages, where I think we must be. little by little we have managed to reach places where artists are from all over the world, carrying artists who have the capacity and excellence to be in those spaces.
Over time, the organization has gradually gained access to prestigious spaces in Boston, such as Boston Common. It also collaborates regularly with Emerson College and the city of Boston to present Latin music from May to October. The organization also organizes events such as “Fiesta in the Square,” the Boston Mayor’s Office’s largest event celebrating Hispanic Heritage month, and has brought the Puerto Rican theater collective Machete Paper to the Paramount Theater, one of the city’s most iconic theaters.
Boricorridor
The effort to increase the visibility of Latin artists has expanded beyond Boston. Through the “Puerto Rican” initiative, a project designed to connect Puerto Rican culture in the diaspora, the organization has facilitated tours for artists from the island to several U.S. cities.
Puerto Ricorrido was born in 2019 becuase when I moved to Boston I began to ask me: where are my peers, the people who are creating Puerto Rican culture outside of Puerto Rico? We know that we are many Puerto Ricans in the diaspora, and the question was how we can support us among us.
“Boricorridor” has two main components: a digital directory of Puerto Rican cultural organizations and an artistic tours program. As 2023, the Board of Directors has registered more than 200 organizations in the northeastern United States. With part of a new three-year $1.8 million grant from the Mellon Foundation, the project will expand to new regions, including Washington, D.C.,to Florida,Texas, and Chicago.
The Tour Puerto Ricorrizer has been well-received by communities. Last year, five groups of artists presented their shows in cities such as New York, Boston, and Hartford. This year, the Tour has spread to Holyoke, Massachusetts, and Philadelphia, with acts that began March 20, 2025, with a ‘stand-up’ performance. other performances are scheduled for March, April, May, June, and October 2025.
That prospect to bring artists, to connect with their audiences, to bring the Puerto Rican audiences of the diaspora, has been super shocking. It has been a beautiful job to be able to take our artists to the United States, present them, work with them and raise their professional artistic abilities, because when you give an artist to leave, to make a tour, to meet other ‘venues’, to work with other producers, it is a very rewarding sensation.
Mellon Foundation Support
The expansion of this initiative is supported by the Mellon Foundation. The Foundation renewed its support for the organization with a significant allocation, allowing “Puerto Ricorrizer” to grow and reach more people.
This is the most transformative support that an organization like ours can have. Because philanthropy, apart from all the social investment they do and how important it is, is a trusted process. The one that an organization with that popularity, with the economic capacity and its institutional support, gives us such transformative support, onyl means that we are doing something well.
