Marine Veteran Killed in Puerto Rico During Spring Break Trip

A U.S. Marine veteran was fatally shot in Puerto Rico during a spring break trip, authorities said, leaving his family devastated and searching for answers. Kevin Javier Claudio-Rosario, 27, died after being shot in the head in the La perla neighborhood of San Juan on Saturday night.
Details of the Shooting and Investigation
According to police reports, Claudio-Rosario was with a group of friends when they were approached by an individual who opened fire. The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. in the popular tourist area known for its vibrant street art and ocean views.
“The motive behind the shooting is currently under investigation,” stated a spokesperson for the Puerto Rico Police Department. ”We are actively pursuing leads and interviewing witnesses to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.”
No arrests have been made as of Monday afternoon. Authorities are reviewing security footage from the area and appealing to the public for any information that coudl assist in the investigation.
Remembering Kevin Claudio-rosario: A Life Cut Short
Claudio-Rosario, a native of New Jersey, served in the Marine Corps for five years, including a deployment to Afghanistan. He was described by family and friends as a kind, adventurous, and devoted individual.”His wholehearted kindness, adventurous spirit, and unwavering commitment to family made him a pillar of strength for his loved ones,” said family spokesperson, Melissa Mares. “Kevin had a shining future ahead, with plans to propose to his girlfriend of six years this fall, and he was always creating memories with those closest to him.”
Mares added that family was central to Claudio-Rosario’s life, and his sudden death has left an ”unfillable void.” A GoFundMe page has been established to help cover funeral expenses and support his family during this difficult time.

Concerns Over Safety in La Perla
While La Perla has become a popular destination for tourists seeking an authentic Puerto Rican experience, the neighborhood has also faced challenges with crime and safety. Local authorities have increased police presence in the area in recent years, but concerns remain.
Travelers are advised to exercise caution when visiting La Perla, especially at night. It’s recommended to travel in groups, avoid displaying valuables, and be aware of your surroundings.
The U.S. State Department currently has a Level 2 Travel Advisory for Puerto Rico,advising travelers to “exercise increased caution” due to crime.
