Puglia, Italy – In a major boost for its healthcare system, teh Puglia region has committed €150 million to hire nearly 2,500 new healthcare workers. The initiative, announced by the regional government, will see 1,000 positions filled instantly, wiht an additional 1,500 hires planned throughout 2025.

This substantial investment comes after careful consideration of the region’s financial resources, including increased funding from the national health service, funds allocated for strengthening territorial healthcare, and resources dedicated to addressing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is a concrete and structural response to the needs of our public health system,” said Puglia President Michele Emiliano. “Unblocking these hires allows us to overcome the critical shortage of personnel and strengthen our regional healthcare structures. The pandemic taught us that public health is at the heart of our community, and thanks to careful resource management, we are now investing decisively to strengthen healthcare services, guarantee essential healthcare levels, and build a more modern, accessible, and responsive healthcare network for all Pugliesi.”

Regional Health Assessor Raffaele Piemontese emphasized the human impact of this initiative. “This plan is the result of months of work and in-depth analysis of the needs of our regional health service,” he said. “It’s not just about numbers,but about people who will be there every day for our citizens: doctors,nurses,healthcare assistants,technicians essential to keep our hospitals and healthcare facilities running. These hires will strengthen our workforce as we ask the regional health system to commit to reducing waiting lists. They will also provide personnel for community health centers,community hospitals,and territorial operations centers,as well as home healthcare services. This is a strategic investment in the health of Pugliesi and the future of our region.”
