Rajkot, India – Cheteshwar Pujara, a name synonymous with resilience and unwavering dedication in Indian cricket, has announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The veteran batsman, who debuted for India in 2010 against Australia, leaves behind a remarkable legacy built on grit, determination, and a classic Test match temperament.
Pujara, a right-handed batter known for his unwavering focus and ability to wear down opposition bowlers, represented India in 103 Test matches. Batting primarily at the crucial No. 3 position, he amassed 7,195 runs at an extraordinary average of 43.60. His Test career was punctuated by 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries, solidifying his place as a cornerstone of the Indian batting lineup for over a decade.
While Pujara’s Test exploits are widely celebrated, his brief stint in the One Day International (ODI) format frequently enough goes unnoticed. He played five ODIs for India, debuting against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in 2013, scoring 51 runs with a highest score of 27.
In a heartfelt retirement statement,Pujara expressed his gratitude for the opportunities and experiences cricket has provided him. “As a little boy from the small town of Rajkot, along with my parents, I set out to aim for the stars; and dreamt to be a part of the Indian cricket team,” Pujara wrote. ”Little did I know then that this game would give me so much – invaluable opportunities, experiences, purpose, love, and above all a chance to represent my state and this great nation.”
He continued, “Wearing the Indian jersey, singing the anthem, and trying my best each time I stepped on the field – it’s impractical to put into words what it truly meant. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and with immense gratitude I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket.”
