The Connection Between Lung Cancer and Pulmonary embolism
Patients diagnosed with lung cancer face a substantially elevated risk of developing pulmonary embolism (PE) – a blockage in the lungs caused by blood clots traveling from elsewhere in the body. Recent research highlights the importance of understanding this connection and identifying factors that contribute to both recurrence and mortality.
A comprehensive study analyzing data from over 2,300 patients with lung cancer revealed a concerning incidence rate. Approximately 8.4% of these patients experienced a pulmonary embolism during the study period. Key Predictors of Pulmonary Embolism Recurrence
The study identified several key factors that increase the likelihood of PE recurrence in lung cancer patients. Notably, a history of prior venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and PE, was a strong predictor. Patients with a previous VTE event had a substantially higher risk of experiencing another PE.
Other significant predictors included the specific type of lung cancer. Adenocarcinoma, a common subtype, was associated with a higher risk of PE compared to other histological types. Additionally, patients undergoing chemotherapy experienced an increased risk, likely due to treatment-related factors affecting blood clotting.

Pulmonary Embolism and Overall Survival
The research demonstrated a clear link between PE and decreased survival rates in lung cancer patients. Those who experienced a PE had a significantly lower overall survival compared to those who did not. The one-year mortality rate was approximately 29.4% among patients who developed a PE, compared to a much lower rate in those without a PE.
Furthermore, recurrent pulmonary embolisms were associated with even worse outcomes. Each subsequent PE event further diminished a patient’s chances of survival,emphasizing the critical need for effective prevention and management strategies.
