Hole tried numerous methods to access the rock’s interior, including using saws, grinders, drills, and even acid. His efforts proved unsuccessful until geologists from Victoria’s Gold Museum examined the rock. They determined it contained approximately 800 grams (28 ounces) of gold.
“It’s just… unbelievable,” Hole told ABC News Australia. “I nearly threw it away so many times.”
The rock is believed to be a naturally formed specimen, not a manufactured gold nugget. Experts suggest the gold formed within the rock over millions of years. The find is valued at over $600,000 AUD (approximately $400,000 USD as of January 19, 2026), according to Smithsonian Magazine.
Hole and his wife have decided to display the rock at the Gold museum, allowing the public to view this extraordinary geological find.
