The Ministry of National Food Security and Research reports that wheat sowing for the Rabi season 2025-26 is largely on track across Pakistan. A national production target exceeding 30 million tonnes has been established,anticipating sufficient water resources in the key growing regions of Punjab and Sindh.
The assessment was delivered during the second meeting of the National Wheat Oversight Committee on January 1, 2026, chaired by Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain. The committee reviewed sowing progress, existing wheat stocks, and the ongoing development of the interim national wheat policy.

Punjab Leads the Way
Punjab is at the forefront of the campaign, having completed 90% of its sowing under early sowing practices. The province aims to produce 26 million tonnes of wheat from approximately 20 million acres. Increased adoption of certified wheat seed and urea fertilizer – facilitated by improved availability and lower prices – are contributing to this positive outlook.
Sindh Exceeds Targets

Challenges in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Sowing in Balochistan is currently behind schedule due to insufficient rainfall, but officials anticipate catching up with forthcoming precipitation. the province has a target of 1.69 million tonnes. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, sowing is substantially complete, although progress is delayed in snowbound areas. KP’s target is 1.71 million tonnes.
Policy and Future Outlook
The finalization of the national wheat policy remains under consideration after several months of review. Despite localized delays, the committee expressed confidence that overall national wheat sowing targets will be achieved for the 2025-26 Rabi season.
