Punjab Minister Bains Advocates for Book Reconnection and Cultural Heritage Preservation
Punjab Language Minister Harjot Singh Bains highlighted the need to reconnect with books and preserve cultural heritage amid rising social media use. At the closing ceremony for ‘Punjabi Month-2024’ at Bhasha Bhawan, he announced various initiatives to promote literature and ensure the Language Department’s financial self-sustainability.
Bains stated the government plans to generate funds through self-sponsored initiatives. He revealed a campaign encouraging the public to gift books during major festivals like Diwali, starting next year. “Books are lifelong companions. In today’s fast-paced world, it is essential to reconnect with our roots through literature,” he said, inviting people to explore the department’s literary works.
He mentioned that the department earned Rs 7 lakh from book sales during ‘Punjabi Month,’ indicating a strong public interest in reading. At the event, awards were given to 15 writers for exceptional literary works in Hindi, Sanskrit, and Urdu from 2023 and 2024. The Language Department’s publications, including “Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Darshan” and “Tarikha Patiala,” were also presented to the public.
