Chisinau, Moldova - Moldovan President Maia Sandu has issued a stark warning, alleging that the Kremlin is orchestrating a multi-pronged campaign to influence the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28. The alleged interference, coordinated from a central hub and heavily funded through schemes linked to fugitive oligarch Ilan Șor, aims to install pro-Russian individuals in the next parliament.
Kremlin’s Alleged Interference Tactics
President Sandu detailed a series of concerning activities, including widespread disinformation and public opinion manipulation campaigns originating from abroad. She also highlighted concerns about paid protests, attempts to sabotage the voting process, and potential cyberattacks targeting the nation’s digital infrastructure and other critical facilities.
“This should not scare us; it should mobilise us,” President Sandu stated, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. “Russian interference poses serious risks to public order and national security and, most importantly, could severely undermine the country’s sovereignty and our European future.”
Moldovan authorities anticipate that religious institutions, along with “opinion leaders” and online influencers, will be leveraged as intermediaries to disseminate anti-European messages.
State Institutions Prepared for Challenges
Despite the looming threats, President sandu reassured citizens that state institutions are aware of the challenges and are prepared to act. “In the coming period, thay must act more cohesively, professionally and as a single team to protect national interests,” she urged. “A arduous period lies ahead, dear citizens. But our future depends only on us.”
Pro-Russian Bloc Victory Rejected
In a recent progress, the Central Election commission of Moldova rejected an application from the pro-Russian bloc Victory, which is reportedly linked to fugitive oligarch Ilan Șor. This decision comes as four pro-Russian parties have announced their intention to form a bloc to contest the elections and challenge the current goverment’s commitment to European Union membership by 2030.
Deteriorating Russia-Moldova Ties
Relations between moldova and Russia, a former Soviet republic, have significantly deteriorated as the Moldovan government has intensified its efforts to integrate with the European Union. Moscow has denied the allegations of interference.
