Puppy Unagi’s appearance shifts dramatically in monkey phase

The five-month-old puppy, whose name translates to eel because of her mottled black and brown brindle coat, has experienced a striking change in appearance that prompted her owner to publicly question her identity.

From Fluffy Puppy to Mischievous Pet

The owner discovered Unagi at a pet store in April 2026, when the female puppy was just two months old and weighed a mere 600 grams. Captivated by her fluffy fur and distinct markings, the owner decided to bring her home immediately. While the puppy initially appeared quiet in the shop, she quickly revealed a playful personality once settled in her new home, frequently playing with toys larger than her body and engaging in gentle nipping.

The Pomeranian Monkey Phase Transformation

By the time Unagi reached five months of age, her appearance shifted dramatically. The dense fluff around her face shortened, and her large, round eyes took on a sharper look, leading her owner to post a lighthearted question of Who are you? on social media. According to veterinary and breed context, this temporary change is commonly known as the monkey phase, a normal shedding stage occurring in Pomeranians between the ages of three months and one year where facial fur thins out.

Viewers React to Unagi's Extreme Transformation

Viewers filled the comment section with surprise and amusement at the transformation, with one commenter writing Wait, is that a Pomeranian? and another noting The change from the first video is extreme, but she is so cute. Experienced Pomeranian owners also chimed in to reassure the public that the monkey phase is a temporary milestone. Despite the stark visual changes, the owner maintains a strong bond with Unagi, stating She is living healthily, so I look forward to working with you as my partner from now on.
